If you believe McCutcheon, Paul Pearl was never offered Massachusetts head coaching job. But, for now, lets say he was. So, why isn’t he the next coach of the Minutemen hockey team? Well, we have a source with a bit more insight into the situation.
Pearl currently works in Worcester, at Holy Cross. However, he actually lives north of Boston. The commute from NoBo to Worcester is not exactly an easy one. For whatever reason, that is what Coach Pearl currently deals with. Moving the ole office to Amherst would only further that distance. By a lot, too. It would basically double his 1 hour and 15 minute commute time, according to Google Maps.
In reality, it would have really created the need for Pearl to move his family west of Boston, at the very least. Taking the Massachusetts gig — leading a Hockey East program — would require Pearl to be all in. This means immersing himself in everything the Amherst campus has to offer.
Clearly this type of challenge is not priority number one for Pearl. It seems that family is. We are hearing that uprooting his family was really the deal breaker.
