Thoughts On UMass Basketball’s New Assistant Coach Marlon Williamson

Derek Kellogg has replaced departing assistant Antwon Jackson. The new assistant coach is Detroit native Marlon Williamson. Marlon was previously the head coach for an AAU program called The Family. The Family is a rather well-known program. In fact, players such as Draymond Green, Kalin Lucas, Manny Harris and Chris Douglas-Roberts have played with Williamson’s AAU team. Coach Kellogg recruited CDR to Memphis while he was an assistant under Coach Calipari.

The Family’s current roster sports two players which Derek Kellogg has already offered a scholarship to — Wes Clark and E.C. Matthews. Clark is a point guard, and E.C. Matthews is a combo guard. Both Clark and Matthews are highly touted, garnering 3 and 4-stars respectively. Each has a good number of other schools offering.

I bring this up for good reason. I hope the addition of Williamson in 2012 leads to the addition of Clark and Matthews in 2013.

I will even take this a step further — I’d hope that
Kellogg hand picked Williamson, not only for his hoops acumen, but to create this new pipeline. There shouldn’t just be a potential chance of some of these Detroit players ending up in Amherst. This should be a flag in the ground on 8 mile.

Welcome to Amherst The Family!

Editor’s note: I can’t find a picture of Marlon for the life of me. Anyone know what this guy looks like?
