Three years ago this month, Bernardo Nunez signed with the Pitt Panthers on National Signing Day. Tomorrow he will become a Minuteman.
Nunez was a Rivals 3-star recruit, and was ranked as the 19th best player in New Jersey coming out of high school. Besides Pitt, Nunez had 2009 offers from Rutgers, Maryland, Michigan State, Temple and Oklahoma. He was also getting looks from Virginia, Virginia Tech and West Virginia.
In October of 2010, former Pitt head coach Dave Wannstedt suspended Nunez and two other players. The problems were reportedly academic in nature.
Bernardo has been doing the JUCO thing to get himself right since leaving Pitt. In fact, he was a JUCO All-American this year. Hopefully Nunez has grown as a person and will realize the opportunity he has been given. At the same time, it’s great to see that he has overcome some adversity.
It’s hard to see what kind of interest Bernardo was getting in recent months. However, he was clearly a talent just a couple years ago. Lets hope there are more talented guys like this coming tomorrow.
