UMass, Davidson Analysis In Brief

A huge win for the Minutemen last night. Massachusetts 73, Davidson 65. It’s the biggest win of the season thus far. Davidson is coming off an upset of a ranked Kansas squad (in Kansas City). How’d the Minutemen do it?

It was the true culmination of a team effort. Maxie Esho had a career night. And Javorn Farrell was his solid self. TV hit a clutch three-pointer. And Putney played great for a stretch. There was someone else that needs to have attention brought upon them.

This is the Jesse Morgan I thought we’d see. I hoped it would happen more consistently last season. The numbers are that much more impressive when you consider that Jesse opened up the game with several misses. That didn’t shake his confidence as he came back to shoot the ball well later in the game.

Consistency is the key. Morgan has tremendous skills — there’s no doubt there. Based on a performance like last night, there is the chance that Morgan can flourish into a major part of this team’s offense.

Heading into the break with a W and that 10-3 record should feel quite good for the team. Some might call this a “let down” game for Davidson. Well, in a sense, UMass has one next Friday when Central Connecticut State comes to Amherst.

The Minutemen should be able to get worked up with CCSU, though. You might recall that Central Connecticut State routed UMass last year down in CT.

To really feel good going into conference play, it be key for UMass to return the favor to CCSU next Friday.
