Alright, maybe I should say, “the potential of Notre Dame scheduling UMass.” Regardless, with Charley Molnar in the fold, can the Minutemen schedule his former program?
Notre Dame has one open date for the 2012 season. Historically, the team has left one open date as a bye week. Thus, the Irish are essentially booked up in 2012. However, 2013 is a different story.
Here is Notre Dame’s 2013 schedule:
Notre Dame opens the 2013 campaign by welcoming the MAC’s Temple to South Bend. The team has four open dates. Taking the one bye week thing into account, that gives the Fighting Irish three teams yet to be scheduled.
On to 2013:
For the 2013 season, the team has 5 open weekends (4 with the bye week included). You should notice that on October 11th, Notre Dame will travel to Philadephia to take on Temple at Lincoln Financial Field (or whatever bank will own naming rights at the time).
Four more open dates in 2014. The MAC team on the schedule is the Akron Zips.
What are our takeaways here?
First, the Irish will schedule MAC teams. Second, a team with an enticing stadium (like Temple) can get a home and home. Does Gillette put UMass in that category? It should.
Lastly, I want to note that for the 2016, 2017 and 2018 seasons Notre Dame has no MAC team scheduled currently.
