Last night the University of Massachusetts has called a press conference for 4 p.m. Thursday. According to multiple sources the presser will be to announce Notre Dame offensive coordinator Charley Molnar as Massachusetts next head football coach. The press conference will be held at Gillette Stadium in Foxboro.
Molnar was a candidate that came out of nowhere this week, as we discussed previously. It was evident immediately that this was McCutcheon’s first choice.
He isn’t the long-shot, dream candidate of Mike Leach, but there but he may actually be the best realistic candidate of the bunch.
So when will Molnar start on the job? Notre Dame is set to play Florida State in the Champs Sports Bowl on Dec. 29. There have been cases when a newly hired coordinator has stayed through a bowl game, as well as times when a coordinator has left immediately.
Not only is Molnar the offensive minded coach that UMass was looking for, he has both Mid-American Conference and recruiting experience. It has also been reported that Molnar focused on Pennsylvania and New Jersey, two states where UMass must recruit effectively to compete in the MAC. Moreover, his MAC days give him at least some pipeline into Michigan and maybe even Ohio — two MAC hotbeds.
There is no mention of the news on the UMass Athletics website as of 9::00AM Amherst time. More on Molnar as the news progresses.
